15th Annual Eyeglass & Hearing Aid Collection

Mass Eyeglasses in Collection Bin

Saturday January 20, 2024 10am-2pm

15th Annual “Lions in Sight” Statewide Eyeglass & Hearing Aid CollectionAs spring cleaning gets under way, the Hawaii Lions are asking people to look through dresser drawers & closets for used eyeglasses & hearing aids and donate them to the Lions Recycle For Sight program.

Hawaii Lions collect eyeglasses year-round and, on this day, the Lions members will be out in force. You can drop off your unwanted eyewear at all Hawaii Walmart stores and other locations throughout the state. At select Walmart stores, Lions will be collecting outside while others will be supporting Walmart Wellness Day events inside the stores. (See listing next page)

You may also place them in specially marked Lions Recycle For Sight collection boxes that are at Walmart’s Vision Centers.  Visit our website hawaiilions.org for other locations throughout the state.  The complete list is prominently displayed on the homepage.

The glasses will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions, LEOs and other groups.  According to the World Health Organization, the eyesight of approximately one-fourth of the world’s population can be improved through the use of a corrective lens.

The glasses will be distributed to those in need within developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible.  In countries such as Afghanistan, Samoa, and the Philippines, an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages, and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.

In addition to the eyeglasses, hearing aids will be also collected, cleaned and tested for local distribution.

*** SPECIAL NOTE *** As part of the 15th Annual State-Wide “Lions in Sight” project, January 20, 2024 the Lions stationed at Kahala Mall (next to the Sunglass Hut fronting Macy’s Wing) from 10:00am – 2:00pm will be offering FREE vision screenings! Hawaii Lions provides this service during the school year; however, not all Hawaii schools participate.  This is a great opportunity to get children tested. Must be at least 4 or older (Grades pre-K, K, 1, 3, 5, and 7). A parental permission slip is required to be filled out.

Lions are known for their commitment to being “Knights of the Blind in the Crusade against Darkness,” a challenging statement made by Helen Keller in 1925.
