Project Vision Hawaii RV Touring Maui
October 21 – October 23, 2011
The Lions Clubs on Maui are shipping over the Oahu based Project Vision Hawaii RV. The mobile vision screening bus will make several stops throughout the island of Maui (schedule & locations below).
Project Vision Hawaii is a non-profit 501(c)3 service with a mission to enhance the quality of life by improving sight, preventing blindness, and advancing medical knowledge through research.
The mobile service offers FREE retina screenings to under-served populations in Hawaii. Costs through private vision providers range at approximately $150 for this type of testing. The primary source of funding is through the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), Atherton Family Foundation, Freeman Foundation, Ohana Health Plan and the operating costs of the bus are paid for by the Lions Clubs of Maui. Data entry volunteers are provided by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), who also handles the result & recommendation mail outs. Young Brothers ships the Project Vision Hawaii RV for free.
Ohana Health Plan will host several “WE”...a hui for health Wellness Events and the RV will be onsite. The WE is open to the public and features free health screenings and information from western and Native Hawaiian healthcare professionals. See attached PDF for a complete list of activities.
The Project Vision Hawaii RV is a mobile screening unit equipped with state-of-the art digital imaging equipment that takes high quality photos of the inside of the eye in a matter of minutes, without the need for medication or pupil dilatation. The unit is staffed by both paid medical personnel and trained volunteers. The entire process takes approximately 10 minutes. An Ophthalmologist reviews images, and results are sent to each participant as well as to a local eye doctor upon request. Referrals to local specialists can also be facilitated.
Throughout the year, Hawaii Lions serve their local community providing various vision screening events. They will man stations at the above listed locations along with the staff from Project Vision Hawaii. For further information, contact Annie Hiller at (808) 282-2265.
